  • Place the bulb(s) firmly in the hole with pointed ends up.
  • Replace the soil, ensuring the bulb(s) are covered.
  • Water thoroughly after planting and during dry periods.

Tips for Growing Potatoes

Potatoes thrive in sunny locations with light, loose, well-drained soil. For best results, plant them in early spring when the ground warms to about 50ºF. Follow these steps for planting:
  • Amend heavy clay soil with organic matter to improve texture.
  • Dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and place the tuber firmly inside.
  • Cover the tuber with 3 inches of soil.
  • When shoots reach 8 inches tall, mound soil halfway up the stems.
Repeat the mounding process during the growing season to keep tubers covered and prevent greening, which can cause bitterness. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and tuber formation, as potatoes are sensitive to drought.
